Ebook Cover Dimensions Guide

Whether you are publishing on Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), Apple Books, Google Play, or Kobo, every ebook platform requires a cover image in a portrait format with approximately a 1:1.6 aspect ratio. The universal recommended size is 1600 × 2560 pixels.

Unlike print covers, ebook covers do not require bleed margins or a spine. They are purely digital — a single flat image that appears as the thumbnail on the store page and on the reader’s device. This makes them simpler to create, but the dimensions must still be exact or platforms may reject your upload.

Common mistakes include submitting covers that are too small (below the minimum resolution), using the wrong aspect ratio (which causes automatic cropping), or compressing images so heavily that text becomes unreadable at thumbnail size. Use this tool to ensure your cover meets all requirements before uploading.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best size for a Kindle ebook cover?
Amazon recommends 1600 × 2560 pixels with a 1:1.6 width-to-height ratio. The minimum accepted is 625 × 1000 px, but larger covers look sharper on high-resolution devices.
Can I use a PNG instead of JPEG?
Amazon Kindle prefers JPEG or TIFF. Apple Books, Google Play, and Kobo accept both PNG and JPEG. This tool exports as JPEG for maximum compatibility across all platforms.
Do I need bleed for an ebook cover?
No. Bleed is only required for print (paperback/hardcover) covers. Ebook covers are digital only and displayed edge-to-edge with no trimming.
Is this tool really free?
Yes. The Ebook Cover Creator is 100% free, runs entirely in your browser, and requires no account or login. Your images are never uploaded to any server.
What is the difference between Fill and Fit mode?
Fill mode scales your image to cover the entire 1600 × 2560 canvas, cropping any excess. Fit mode scales the image to fit entirely inside the canvas, adding a solid background color to any remaining space.
Can I use this for print covers too?
This tool is designed for ebook (digital) covers at 1600 × 2560 px. For print covers with bleed, spine, and 300 DPI export, use our KDP Cover Builder.
